A sky shelf refers to the highest storage area located at the very top of a gondola display unit. It is placed higher than eye level, mainly for extra storage or visual display rather than every day shopping access.
How to determine if there is a sky shelf?
Is the shelf is well above average reach and above eye level?
Is is positioned above the gondola's main upright slotes?
Are there lack of lables or tags often indicate a sky shelf?
Is the shelf used for storage or display rather than regular sales?
Are the items stacked or boxed instead of neatly faced?
If yes, then it is a Sky shelf.
What does NOT count as a Sky shelf:
The top regular shelf of the gondola
Shelves at eye level or below
Product stored in the backroom
If product is merchandised on the sky shelf, be sure to document it clearly.
Overhang, what to look for?
A metal cap extending oout over the top shelf.
Not flat or deep enough to hold product.
Tip: If sticks out on top but you can’t set product on it, it’s an overhang.
Below are examples of Gondola with Sky Shelf and Without as well as Shelf with overhang.
